Finally, a giant has emerged in the world of smartphones! It was a tight race, with both the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 and the Vivo X Fold featuring the same 8.03-inch inner display size. However, the Mix Fold 3 clinches the victory by a mere 0.03 inches, boasting a 6.56-inch outer screen.
Similar to its predecessor, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, the Mix Fold 3 represents an upgrade in nearly every aspect. While the inner display didn’t undergo major changes in size, the cover screen saw a significant brightness improvement, jumping from 1000 to 2600 nits.
Additionally, the Mix Fold 3 received other expected incremental upgrades, such as a larger 4800 mAh battery and an improved chipset. One notable enhancement over its previous versions is the inclusion of wireless charging capabilities — a feature that’s essential for the world’s largest smartphone.
#2 Vivo X Fold, Vivo X Fold+, and Vivo X Fold2 (8.03” unfolded, 6.53” folded)
There are three versions of the Vivo X Fold series, and they all boast identical screen sizes. The first to hit the shelves was the Vivo X Fold in early 2022, followed by the Vivo X Fold+ later that year, and finally, the Vivo X Fold2 joined the lineup in 2023. All three devices feature an impressive 8.03-inch display on the inside and a 6.53-inch display on the outside.
Across the three models of the Vivo X Fold, there weren’t many changes to the internal or external displays. They all maintained the same screen size, resolution, and 120Hz refresh rate. However, there were some incremental improvements in charging speeds, chipset upgrades, and enhancements to the camera capabilities.
Similar to Xiaomi, Huawei, and Honor devices, the Vivo X Fold series is manufactured in China and isn’t directly available for purchase in the United States. Nevertheless, the Vivo X Fold does support Google Play Services.
#3 Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 (8.02” unfolded, 6.56” folded)
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 follows in the footsteps of the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold, and for the most part, it outshines its predecessor in various aspects. It boasts larger screens, featuring an 8.02-inch display inside and a 6.56-inch display outside, along with a superior chipset, enhanced refresh rate, and an OLED display. Plus, it’s noticeably lighter than before.
While transitioning from the Mi Mix Fold to the Mix Fold 2, the most significant changes include the reduction in camera resolution from 108 megapixels to 50 megapixels and the decrease in battery capacity from 5020mAh to 4500mAh. Yet, in the grand scheme of the improvements made across the device, these differences hardly impact its performance.
Additionally, the Mix Fold 2 boasts a slightly improved aspect ratio on the outer display, lending it a more natural standalone phone screen feel. Coupled with the higher refresh rate, the outer display of the Mix Fold 2 becomes considerably more functional and user-friendly.
#4 Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold (8.01” unfolded, 6.52” folded)
Following the pattern of Chinese phones not accessible in the U.S., we have the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold. Its inner display is just a tad larger than the Huawei Mate X, while the outer one measures 6.52 inches. Both displays, however, offer a 90Hz refresh rate.
At first glance, the Mi Mix Fold resembles the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, with its sleek, candy bar-shaped outer display. Yet, it packs some unique features, including an impressive 108-megapixel camera, a feature later omitted in its successor models. Additionally, the Mi Mix Fold’s PC Mode was a pioneering feature, setting a precedent for foldable devices.
One notable advantage Xiaomi holds over Huawei is its devices’ compatibility with American companies, unlike the banned Huawei devices. Consequently, the Mi Mix Fold and other Xiaomi devices support Google Play Services and Android.
#5 Huawei Mate X and Huawei Mate Xs (8.0” unfolded, 6.6” folded)
The Huawei Mate X and Mate Xs stand as the largest Huawei phones to date. When unfolded, both feature an expansive 8-inch screen, shrinking to a still substantial 6.6 inches when folded. This places them among the top contenders for folded screen size, with a folded display just 0.01 inches shy of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Despite their similar names, both the Mate X and Mate Xs share the outie design, akin to the Huawei Mate Xs 2. Released a year apart, the devices differ mainly in hardware, with the Mate Xs boasting a more potent GPU and CPU than its predecessor.
However, the most significant contrast lies in the software realm. The Mate X debuted when Huawei still had access to Google Play Services, but neither phone made it to the U.S. due to the Huawei ban, which took effect six months before the Mate X’s release.
#6 Huawei Mate X2 (8.0” unfolded, 6.45” folded)
Here comes Huawei again with the Mate X2. It’s the first foldable on our list sporting an impressive 8-inch display, though its outer screen matches the Honor Magic V and Magic Vs at 6.45 inches. Similar to the Honor phones we discussed earlier, the Mate X2’s inner display maxes out at a 90Hz refresh rate.
Despite lacking Google Play, the Mate X2 stands out as the first Huawei device here to run Android. Positioned among its successors, it’s a great phone that could have been a hit in the U.S. if not for Huawei’s ban.
But, there’s a big hurdle—the price. Converted to U.S. dollars, the base Mate X2 costs roughly $2,800. While paying around $2,000 for a foldable isn’t unheard of, shelling out nearly $3,000 seems outrageous, even for die-hard fans.
#7 Honor Magic V2 (7.92” unfolded, 6.4” folded)
The Honor Magic V2 brings some upgrades and downgrades compared to its predecessors. Most notably, its inner display measures 7.92 inches, just a smidge larger than the Magic V or Magic Vs. However, the outer display shrinks slightly to 6.4 inches.
Released in July 2023, the Magic V2 also boasts a faster 120Hz refresh rate on its inner screen. Despite this upgrade, it retains the same 5000mAh battery as the Magic Vs, which previously justified the lower 90Hz refresh rate. Whether future Honor foldables will feature even larger displays remains to be seen, but for now, the Magic V2 reigns as their largest offering.
#8 Honor Magic V, Honor Magic Vs (7.9” unfolded, 6.45” folded), Honor Magic Vs Ultimate,
Honor’s Magic V series, including the Magic V, Magic Vs, and Magic Vs Ultimate, offers intriguing foldable options not accessible in the United States. All three models feature a consistent 7.9-inch inner screen and a 6.45-inch outer display. The initial Magic V debuted in January 2022, followed by the Honor Magic Vs and Vs Ultimate in December 2022.
Although the Magic Vs didn’t see a display upgrade from the original Magic V, improvements were made in other areas like the camera and battery. Despite these enhancements, the camera performance doesn’t quite match up to other flagship smartphones, which is notable considering the Magic Vs’ price tag of around $1,700.
A noteworthy aspect of the Honor Magic V and Magic Vs displays is their 90Hz refresh rate, slightly lower than the industry standard but still higher than some phones like the base model iPhone. This refresh rate choice helps conserve battery life, resulting in longer usage between charges, which is a plus for both models.
#9 Tecno Phantom V Fold (7.85” unfolded, 6.42” folded)
Buying a smartphone can be pricey, especially when flagship models often cost close to $1,000 or more. Foldable phones take it a step further, with even smaller options like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Motorola Razr usually hitting the $1,000 mark, and tablet-style foldables often exceeding $1,500.

#10 Huawei Mate X3 and Huawei Mate X5 (7.85” unfolded, 6.4” folded)
Next up, we have the Huawei Mate X3 and Huawei Mate X5, both sharing the same design. The Mate X3 debuted in March 2023, featuring a 7.85-inch inner screen and a 6.4-inch outer display. Similarly, the Mate X5, released later that year, maintained these screen dimensions.
Unlike their cousin, the Huawei Mate Xs 2, the Mate X3 and Mate X5 follow a design similar to the Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, featuring an outer screen and a larger folded display inside. These outer screens also have a more traditional shape compared to the Pixel Fold or Galaxy Z Fold. Alongside its expansive screen, the Mate X3 boasts impressive features such as fast charging and a high-quality camera, positioning it as one of the top choices in the foldable market.
Despite these remarkable features, Huawei faces challenges in gaining widespread recognition in the foldable market due to its ban in the United States since 2019. While it’s still possible to obtain a Huawei device, users encounter limitations such as the absence of Android OS and no access to the Google Play Store.
#11 Huawei Mate Xs 2 (7.8” unfolded, 6.5” folded)
While Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series has maintained a consistent size throughout its existence, the Huawei Mate X lineup showcases various changes in screen size. Among the Huawei Mate X models, it’s the Huawei Mate Xs 2 that stands out with the smallest screen on this list. The Mate Xs 2 boasts a 7.8-inch unfolded display and a 6.5-inch display when folded.
What distinguishes the Huawei Mate Xs 2 from other foldables is its unique “outie” design. Unlike the Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, which feature separate screens inside and outside, the Mate Xs 2 integrates one large screen that folds in half. This outie design maintains a normal form factor when folded, addressing a major drawback seen in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold “innie” lineup.
One notable advantage of the Huawei Mate Xs 2’s outie display is its creaseless design, which eliminates the visible crease commonly found in other foldables, particularly noticeable under certain lighting conditions.
#12 Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 (7.6” unfolded, 6.2” folded)
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold stands as one of the most recognizable names in the foldable phone market, reigning supreme with few direct competitors. Despite its dominance, it doesn’t hold the title for the largest foldable screen. The Galaxy Z Fold has maintained the same screen size for four generations, boasting a 7.6-inch unfolded display and a 6.2-inch external screen.
Even with the latest model, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, the screen dimensions remain unchanged, sticking to the standard sizes introduced since the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Although the exterior screen has undergone minor dimensional adjustments to move away from its candy bar shape, its overall size has stayed consistent.
The only significant alteration to the device’s dimensions occurred during the transition from the first-generation Galaxy Fold to the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Initially, the original Galaxy Z Fold featured a 7.3-inch unfolded display paired with a much smaller 4.6-inch external screen. With the Galaxy Z Fold maintaining its size across four iterations, it raises curiosity about potential changes in Samsung’s upcoming releases.
#13 Google Pixel Fold (7.6” unfolded, 5.8” folded)
